Before you go‎ > ‎

Getting Ready

What to Expect You should expect, and we hope you enjoy, the differences. The differences are good; they are the reason we travel. You are going to eat the local food, speak the local language, and work with the local people.

You will be active for the duration of your stay here, either learning, working on a project, or going to visit something amazing. There is always something more to experience and we're going to help you do it.

Before You Arrive

Health Nicaragua is a sub-tropical, developing country and as such we strongly recommend that you contact your doctor regarding vaccinations and general health care. You should see your doctor at least 6-8 weeks before arrival, as some vaccinations take this long to complete.

Insurance You must have travel insurance before you arrive in Nicaragua. We will require a copy of your insurance policy, including emergency contact numbers when you arrive.

Packing Our traveling experiences have taught us two simple rules for packing:
  • Don't pack more than you can carry on your own
  • Pack comfortable shoes
A basic packing list should include:

  • Bathing suit
  • Bath Towel
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Light Rain Coat
  • T-Shirts
  • Polo Shirts
  • Trousers/Pants
  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Sandals
  • Tennis Shoes
  • Small Flashlight
  • Camera
  • Sun Screen
  • Toiletries
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • Emergency Contact Details
  • Credit/Debit card

Keep in mind that Casa-Nica has a laundry facility that you can use as often as you like, so you can pack light. Also, there are many stores in Masaya where you can purchase all basic necessities.

Don't bring anything that you would be very unhappy about losing. Traveling in developing countries can be hard on electronics, so if you bring something valuable then make sure it's insured.

Remember that you're in a developing country a long way from the fashions that you are dressing for now. Simple, sensible clothing is recommended.
